Custom Pet Portraits from a Photo: Turn Your Dog or Cat Into Wall Art

Your dog or cat deserves a spot on the wall, and a painting of them lands differently than a phone photo does. The good news: you do not have to wait three weeks or spend a couple hundred dollars to get one.

A phone photo of a happy golden retriever with its tongue out, a city skyline behind it in a park.

Uploaded from a phone

The same golden retriever rendered as a soft watercolor portrait, eyes squinted in joy and tongue out.

Painted in the studio

Three ways to get one, and which fits you

There are really three ways to turn a photo of your pet into a painting, and they suit different people:

  • Hand-painted by an artist. A beautiful heirloom, and worth it if you want a true oil painting and can wait. It usually runs $100 to $250 and takes two to four weeks.
  • A free phone app. Turns your photo into a painting on your screen in a tap. Great for a quick filter, but you end up with a small digital file, not something framed on your wall.
  • An AI studio like this one. Where most people land: upload your photo, watch it painted in any style in seconds, and get a real framed print shipped to your door. Fast, affordable, and it actually ends up on the wall.

Styles that suit pets

The nice part of doing it this way is that you are not locked into one look. A few that flatter pets especially well:

  • Watercolor. Soft, warm, and forgiving, it is the most universally flattering, and the style in the example above.
  • Impressionist oil. Loose, painterly brushwork and warm light, for a piece that reads like a gallery portrait.
  • Clean modern illustration. Flat shapes and a simple background, graphic and contemporary.
  • Classic oil. A timeless, formal look, the quiet cousin of the "royal pet" portrait without the costume.

Not sure which fits your space? The 10 art styles guide walks through the looks the studio does best.

How it works

  1. 1Upload a clear photo of your pet. In the studio, tap the image icon in the chat and pick any photo from your phone.
  2. 2Tell it the style, and to keep your pet as they are. Something like: "Turn this into a soft watercolor, keep my dog exactly as he is."
  3. 3Watch it painted in seconds. Not quite right? Ask for a tweak, or try a different style on the same photo. It is free to keep exploring.
  4. 4Pick your size and frame, and it prints, frames, and ships, ready to hang. (The sizing guide will tell you how big to go.)

Pick the right photo

The painting is only as good as the photo it starts from, so a minute of care here pays off:

  • Good light, clear focus. A bright, sharp photo gives the best result. A dark or blurry one gives the studio less to work with.
  • Get close. A photo where your pet fills most of the frame paints more cleanly than one where they are small in a busy scene.
  • Face on, or a slight angle. The same framing that flatters people flatters pets, their expression is the whole piece.

Prompts to try

Upload your pet's photo first, then paste one of these and swap in your own dog or cat. The phrase that matters most is some version of "keep them exactly as they are."

A gift that lands

A pet portrait is one of those gifts people keep. For a friend with a new puppy, for the person whose cat clearly runs the house, or as a gentle keepsake of a pet who has passed, a painting on the wall says more than a card ever could, and it is ready in minutes rather than weeks.
