How to Create Space Wall Art: Planets, Moons and Night Skies

A planet is about the simplest picture there is: one sphere, one light, a great deal of dark. That is what makes space wall art so easy to live with. It gives a room a single, certain place to look, and it goes with almost everything you already own.

A framed print of Jupiter on a sunlit cream wall above a wooden sideboard with a record player, records and a trailing plant.
A tall framed print of Saturn on a deep blue ground, hung on a warm yellow wall above a leather armchair and a brass floor lamp.
Jupiter Ascendant over a record corner, and Saturn Adrift in a reading nook.

Why planets work on a wall

Most art asks you to read it. A planet does not. The shape is familiar from across the room, the dark ground acts like a built-in mat, and the color sits in one place, so the print holds a wall without shouting over it.

The palettes are friendlier than you might expect, too. Jupiter is all cream, sand and rust, which sits happily with wood, leather and warm paint. Neptune and Saturn bring deep blues that cool a bright room down. None of it looks like a poster from a science classroom. Framed, it looks like something chosen.

Where it works in a home

  • Above a desk or a record player. One planet, centered, gives a working corner a point of calm.
  • The bedroom. Dark, quiet pictures are what a bedroom wants. The bedroom wall art guide explains why.
  • A hallway or stair. Two or three planets in matching frames turn a passage into a small gallery.
  • A kid's room that will grow up. A real framed Saturn outlasts any cartoon rocket, and still looks right when they are fifteen.

Size, frame and pairing

Give a planet room. The dark around it is part of the picture, so a size up from your first instinct almost always looks better. Over furniture, aim for a print about two thirds as wide as the piece below it. The sizing guide has the simple rules.

For the frame, black lets the planet float, natural wood warms it, and white suits a dark wall. For a pair, keep the frames the same and let the planets differ: warm Jupiter beside cool Neptune is the classic. Every piece below shows you each frame and size before you decide.

The Celestial collection

Original pieces, printed on archival paper and framed in real wood. Framed prints start at about $52, shipping in the United States is free, and no account is needed to buy.

  • Jupiter Ascendant. The whole planet, banded in cream and rust, with the Great Red Spot low on its face. The one people stop at.
  • Neptune Rising. A half-lit blue giant against a scatter of stars. Cool, quiet and a natural partner for Jupiter.
  • Rings of Saturn. A wide landscape print, made for the space above a sofa, a bed or a long sideboard.

Or see the whole collection in a room.

Make your own

Have a particular sky in mind? Describe it in the Studio and see it in seconds. These are good places to start:

A single planetMars as a whole sphere on a pure black background, fine surface detail, soft light from the upper left, a few faint stars, calm and minimal

The moonA large full moon rising over a dark calm sea, fine crater detail, deep navy sky, a thin band of reflected light on the water, quiet and still

Painterly night skyThe Milky Way over a desert ridge as an impressionist oil painting, visible brushwork, deep indigo and warm ochre, no people

For a kid's roomThe planets of the solar system in a row as a clean modern illustration, soft muted colors on a deep navy background, simple shapes, friendly and calm

Space wall art: quick answers

Where does space wall art look best?
Anywhere you want one calm, confident focal point: above a desk or a record player, in a bedroom, a hallway, a home office or a reading corner. A single planet on a dark ground reads as quiet and grown-up, which is why it suits living spaces as well as a kid's room.
What frame suits a planet print?
Black is the classic: it disappears into the dark sky and lets the planet float. Natural wood warms the picture up and suits lighter rooms. White works when the wall is dark. Every piece can be previewed in each frame before you buy.
How big should it be?
A planet needs room around it, so go one size larger than you first think. Over a desk or sideboard, a print about two thirds the width of the furniture looks right. The sizing guide walks through it for any wall.
How much does framed space wall art cost?
Framed planet prints start at about $52, with the exact price shown for every size and frame before checkout. Shipping in the United States is free, and prints arrive in 5 to 9 business days, framed and ready to hang.
Can I make my own?
